Hi Sarah,

My name is Justin Cummings and I am a friend of Josh Allen from Florida
International University. Josh informed me that you are the site
coordinator at the Luquillo LTER site. I wanted to contact you to inform
you about a new undergraduate program here at UCSC with the hopes that you
could help spread information about our program to students and colleagues
in Puerto Rico. The *Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program
**(conservationscholars.ucsc.edu
<http://conservationscholars.ucsc.edu/>) *at the University of California
Santa Cruz is a newly founded two year conservation mentorship program. Each
winter beginning this year, we will select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars
from around the US, Puerto Rico, and Guam to participate in the
program. Our goal
is to *recruit students from groups traditionally underrepresented in
conservation, across disciplines, * *who can contribute to diversifying,
redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water*
. We have chosen to focus our efforts on serving college freshmen and
sophomores, at a stage when we can support their undergraduate careers and
their choices as they graduate.

The program consists of an eight-week, intensive summer course integrating
conservation design, leadership and research experiences during the first
year, a workshop in professional development the following winter, and
an eight-week conservation practice internships with excellent mentors at
nationally recognized conservation organizations and agencies the following
summer. Scholars receive mentorship throughout the year from identified
mentors at their home institutions and from the UCSC program staff. We
cover all program expenses and provide each Scholar with a $4000 stipend
during each of their two summers. Scholars who complete the program become
a part of an established national network of Doris Duke Conservation
Scholars.

My hope is that you could share the program information with students and
faculty, especially those teaching freshman entry level classes, who may be
able to identify students that would benefit from our program. Applications
for the 2016 class of Scholars are available on the website and are
due February 15, 2016. If you would like to nominate one or more students
yourself, we invite you to complete the attached nomination form and return
it to us. Please note that nominations are not required, but they help
connect students to us directly and help us identify standout
candidates. Thank
you in advance for your help and if you have any questions please feel free
to contact me.

Warmly,

--
