Hi Jess,

Thanks for sharing this with me. My initial reaction to the schedule is
that it largely addresses one of the five areas for the report, the
site-based science. An emphasis on that is appropriate, as I think the
research at the site is the foundation for the LTER. However, it will be
important to touch on the other 4 areas of the report to provide the site
review team with the information needed for the whole report. Also, within
the site-based research, it will be important to address the 5 core areas
of the long-term monitoring and I’m not sure that I see a time set aside
for that. This is a little surprising given Mike’s comments about the core
data collection effort during our phone conversation. I do see the
education and outreach topic on day 2 (item 4 below), and I’m glad to see
time set aside for presentation about the Forest Service Research, but I do
not see specifically where topics 2,3, and 5 will be presented. Certainly I
anticipate that for topic 2, Information Management, there will be
exchanges between your site IM manager and the IM reviewer, but as IM
should be integrated into the whole of the LTER project, I would hope that
at least an overview of the topic would be presented to the review team as
a whole. I also recognize that the poster session will be an opportunity to
meet and talk with students and post-docs, but I think at least some time
should be set aside for a sit down with these individuals and perhaps
include technicians at the site for the review team to be able to better
evaluate parts of item 5 below.

I hope this is helpful. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions
or comments.

Best,

Lou

1. *Site-based Research*, including the conceptual model, long-term
experiments, modeling as a tool for insight, and the collection of
long-term data in the 5 core areas of primary production, population
dynamics and trophic structure, organic matter accumulation, inorganic
inputs and movements of nutrients through the ecosystem, and patterns and
frequency of disturbances.

2. *Information Management*, including activities that address the 2
essential objectives of Information Management at a LTER site: (1) the
collection and analysis of data necessary to complete the proposed research
activities and (2) the availability of data and other relevant digital
products to science, education, and general public users.

3. *Network-Level Participation and Synthesis* activities including any
cross-site research.

4. *Education, Outreach and Training*, including REUs, graduate students,
post-doctoral scholars, and the schoolyard LTER activities

5. *LTER Site Management* including leadership structure and decision
making, fiscal accountability and budgets, site security and management,
engagement of new investigators, promoting diversity of the scientific team.

Hi Lou,

I share a preliminary next draft of the schedule for your input. We are
meeting tomorrow to finalize this, but I thought I'd let you look it over
first for your input if you have the time. I have built in lots of extra
time, knowing the place, so we will likely be done early each day rather
than run over.

Also, here is a map of the various locations so you get the sense of the
geography: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?hl=en&hl=

Hi Lou,

I will talk to the MC tomorrow about the new charge. I don't think it will
be hard to put together. Perhaps by the end of the month? I'll let you
know more firmly tomorrow.

In the meantime, I can give you a more detailed scheduled for them to see
all the stops and how they fit with the proposal. How about that?

Hi Jess,

Do you have a sense of when you will be sending me your progress report
document for distribution to the site review team? The team has had some
initial reactions to the site review schedule, but felt that they should
read your review document to better assess whether they want to make
suggestions on the schedule to ensure they have the information needed for
their report.

Best,

Lou
