Hi Wade, Hap, et al -

1. Re citation XSL:
It looks to me like the current LTER template is using the
creator/organizationName element in the citation's publisher, but Duane
will have to confirm.

EDI has added this to it's list of tasks already. Most likely, the
solution will be something like the below.

authors (before the pub date) are from these paths, in document order:
/eml:eml/dataset/creator/individualName

date:
/eml:eml/dataset/pubDate
*** this could be year-only, currently, LTER uses the entire contents of
the field.

title:
/eml:eml/dataset/title

publisher:
publisher/organizationName
*** a string could be appended (e.g., a repository name) but this needs
to be discussed. right now, it appears that "; Long Term Ecological
Research Network" is appended.
*** the <publisher> element is optional, so logic to use the repository
name in its absence might be appropriate.

DOI:
[system metadata]

2. Re requirements from publisher on dataset citations:
I have not seen that from Elsevier yet (they are the publisher for ESA
journals, correct?)

The pressure to adopt a std could come from repositories or authors, but
in reality, journals will probably still request whatever they want from
authors. And unless data repositories are directly funded by publishers,
they will probably not feel that they have to cover every possible
format. You should know that other paper-data alignment topics have
already popped up, e.g., intellectual right statements for data that are
consistent with publisher's policies.

I agree that "publication place" isn't particularly informative for a
purely digital resource. It might be worth the scientist asking the
journal what info they really were after. Possibly, they really want to
know about the data's originating org - e.g. a physical LTER site,
which does have a physical location -- but they are simply conflating
that with "publication" since sometimes a data posting is a local URL,
not via a repository.
