[LTER-BioProd] Agenda paper: new draft, and request to present

I like Laura W's idea of updating this figure. I don’t think IPBES has any arrows between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, though because biodiversity and ecosystems are both lumped together into a single box called ’Nature’ in the IPBES conceptual framework. The issue, at least as I see it, is that this obscures the dependence of ecosystem functioning and services on biodiversity. There are many other points that we can make, but this seems like an important point to emphasize.
Best wishes,
Forest

Attaching an idea for a modification to Laura's figure to show what I mean, in case it's not clear

I am also attaching my higher-level comments in this word document. For the venue of the paper, what about Nature Sustainability as a Perspective? My sense is that it might hit the audience we want more than Current Opinions.

Along those lines, I'm also attaching a paper in press led by Hui Xiao in which we develop a modeling framework to quantify the value of information about feedbacks from ecosystem function-biodiversity-and services for managing ecosystems for multiple conservation objectives (BD and ES). The intro of the paper and the case study application provide some potentially useful examples of such feedbacks (and the extent to which they have been considered in management) that could be helpful for us to cite and flesh out more examples in our paper. Hui's paper should be out soon.

In other words, we could keep the introduction shorter and more straight to the point and present the challenges earlier. I have a few additional comments attached.

This progress is motivated by me giving a talk at a Biodiversity/Climate Change meeting in Switzerland this coming Thursday. Some of us will be there (Michel, Forest, Jane, Andy H…) and the Agenda paper leaders felt this would be a good time to present this to that audience. Many of the attendees will include people actively involved in the recent IPBES reports.

I apologize for the short notice on this, and I also apologize for sending it on a Friday. If you have any major reservations with me presenting any part of this, let me know. I would like to acknowledge everyone in this group as a co-author on this part of my talk, and if you would prefer that I not do that (or not include your name at this stage) let me know. Ideally, before Tuesday July 2nd. If I don’t hear from you I’ll assume it’s ok to present this with you included as a contributor.
