‌ ‌ Familiar Faces Friday Enjoy these short virtual updates from Hubbard Brook. The Final Installment: News from the Nest Box with Gary Lovett Hi bluebird fans: This video was shot on May 27, 15 days after hatch, and you can see that the chicks have grown a lot bigger, their eyes are fully open, and they have their spotted juvenile plumage. They are so big that usually all four of them do not fit in the camera view. It’s crowded, hot, and buggy in the nest box, so you will see a lot of scratching, jostling, and trying out of wings. Watch the chick on the left trying to catch a nap, only to be interrupted by his annoying sibling. Then one of the parents shows up at the box with a bug, causing pandemonium. In the next day or two the chicks will take the big leap out of the nest box and into the wide world. (And we will be empty-nesters, once again!) They will continue to be fed by their parents outside the box for a couple of weeks, until they learn to feed themselves. After that, the adults are likely to raise a second clutch, probably in another box. So this is the last you will see of these chicks—wish them luck as they venture out into the world beyond their nest box! —Gary Pop Quiz! How well do you know Hubbard Brook? The following challenge was submitted by Scott Bailey. Looking at the picture below, can you: Locate the Pierce Lab building? Draw the boundary of the Hubbard Brook watershed? Identify all the named peaks (hint: there are at least 10)? NB: This image is best viewed on a desktop. Click to enlarge. Respond to this email to submit your answers and/or receive an answer key!
