‌ ‌ Familiar Faces Friday Enjoy these short virtual updates from Hubbard Brook. News from the Nest Box with Gary Lovett Hi, bluebird fans! This video, recorded on May 21, is the 10th day after hatching for the bluebird chicks in our nest box. There are four of them now—the fifth one disappeared last week when it was still tiny. We think it died of natural causes and was removed by the adults, because there are no signs of predation. The four remaining chicks are growing rapidly from a continual supply of insects brought by the parents. You can see in this video that their scruffy little feathers are turning blue, and this is the first day they are opening their eyes. Mostly they huddle in a twitching mass until they hear one of the parents land on the box, then they beg for food. You can see in the video that one of the chicks is not begging; I think it is because he got the last bug meal. Some of the bugs that are delivered are almost as big as the chick’s head, so they may feel full for a while afterward. The adult in the video pauses to pick up a fecal sac before it leaves the nest. It’s hard to believe, but these chicks will probably fledge in under a week. Take care! —Gary Where in the woods is Ian? Spring ephemerals are in bloom at Hubbard Brook!
