[LTER-luq] NGEE/NASA flight update

Dear colleagues,

I have been in communication with Doug Morton (NASA lead for the recent mission) and Jeff Chambers (lead of DOE NGEE-Tropics) this week about the possibility of a flyover of the EYNF. This would require ~$200K. The NGEE team with discuss with DOE program managers week after next, and was planning to discuss any interest DOE/BER might have in a multi-agency approach for PR. NASA is evaluating whether they can contribute about $50K via internal funding mechanisms.

In the meantime, have submitted a prospectus for a RAPID to the NSF Ecosystems Panel with the goal of funding vegetation damage assessments on the ground and have made them aware of the potential for cost-sharing. I will keep you posted once I hear back from NSF and the NGEE and NASA teams.

Best wishes,

Maria

Subject: Infrastructure

All,

I have spoken with Program Officers at NSF in the Division of Biotic Infrastructure to provide them with a general, albeit incomplete, overview of what we know or do not know about damage to infrastructure (buildings, towers, instruments) at EVFS and environs, and to let them know that communication is not close to fully restored with collaborators on the island.

In addition, I learned that there is talk of coordinated activities by FEMA and NSF to help scientists and students temporarily relocate to mainland institutions and facilities if that will allow them to make progress with their research-related activities. I will hopefully learn more on Monday about this, and report back thereafter.

With respect to hurricane induced damage, the advice from NSF was to make two provisional lists: (1) structural damage to facilities and (2) loss of, or damage to, instruments and equipment. So, it looks like you are already making good progress in this regard.

I hope that this information is useful.

Best,

Mike

I heard from Todd via Rita. He made it to El Verde, but unfortunately the satellite phone is sporadically effective, so he and Jess are still out of regular touch. They are clearing trails at EVFS; they made it out to the Prieta today. Tomorrow they will work on the trail to CTE 3 (if I interpreted the message correctly). Rita promised to keep me posted, and I will pass on whatever I hear.

Regards,

Bob
