Dear Colleagues:

You are cordially invited to a workshop to discuss a planned airborne remote sensing campaign to study the wet and moist forest areas of Puerto Rico. The workshop will be held at the USFS International Institute of Tropical Forestry Conference Room in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico on July 6, 2016 from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The goal of the workshop is to provide information regarding the remote sensing campaign to the community of researchers who study ecology and related topics in Puerto Rico. Also we will gather information from the community to improve the mission plan including locations for data acquisition. Working together before any remote sensing data is acquired we hope to design an optimally effective campaign to maximize benefits to a broad research community. A definitive agenda will be distributed shortly.

Researchers sponsored by the Department of Energy Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments Tropics (NGEE-Tropics) project (http://esd.lbl.gov/ngee-tropics/) will carry out the remote sensing campaign. The main goals of the campaign are to quantify biomass recovery in Puerto Rican forests following near total deforestation in the early 20th Century and to investigate how plant-canopy spectral traits respond to current forest conditions including tree species distributions and ecosystem physiological and biogeochemical properties. An area of approximately 3000 km2 will be covered using the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center G-LiHT (http://gliht.gsfc.nasa.gov/) instrument package between January and March 2017. G-LiHT includes lidar, hyperspectral, and thermal instruments. Following NASA and DOE data policies, to maximize usefulness of the campaign, data will be released publically and distributed freely following data processing and calibration.

Space is limited to 40 participants and will be allocated on a first-come basis. Unless we have previously contacted you, please assume that you must cover your own travel costs. Please indicate your interest in attending the workshop by e-mail to Jayleen Vera (jayleengvera at fs.fed.us<mailto:jayleengvera at fs.fed.us>) by June 10. For those visiting from off island, lodging reservations will be made for group at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Juan Hotel & Casino, 8000 Tartak Street, Carolina - San Juan, 00979 PR in accordance with your itinerary and easily accessible from the airport. For technical questions, please contact Michael Keller (mkeller.co2 at gmail.com).

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

Michael Keller
