*Postdoctoral Fellow in Smart Reforestation with Agua Salud Project*

Location: Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama

Smart Reforestation <http://www.stri.si.edu/smartreforestation/> is a
Smithsonian Institution research program that studies how to manage land to
maximize the flow of different goods and services for the benefit of
multiple stakeholders in response to global change. At the Smithsonian
Tropical Research Institute <http://www.stri.si.edu/index.php#.VbjsuPlViko>,
the program includes studies of the best spatial juxtaposition of different
land uses to optimize suites of different ecosystem services and the broad
spectrum of reforestation and land restoration. The Postdoctoral Fellow
will work with Dr. Jefferson S. Hall
<http://www.stri.si.edu/english/scientific_staff/staff_scientist/scientist.php?id=51>
on research in the native species plantations of the Agua Salud project
<http://www.forestgeo.si.edu/aguasalud/> within the Center for Tropical
Forest Science – Forest Global Earth Observatory
<http://www.forestgeo.si.edu/aguasalud/> (CTFS-ForestGEO). The plantations
were designed to tease apart interactions between selected species to
disentangle mechanisms of competition, facilitation, and complementary use
of resources. The successful fellow may also work on reforestation and
restoration research in other areas of Panama.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in reforestation or
restoration research with knowledge of nutrient cycling and/or microbial
ecology, tree physiology, forest ecology (preferably tropical), strong
analytical and writing skills, and the ability and willingness to work in a
team environment.

The successful fellow will be based at the Smithsonian Tropical Research
Institute in Panama, and will be awarded the standard Smithsonian
postdoctoral stipend <http://www.smithsonianofi.com/fellowship-stipends/>.
Initial appointment is for two years, and is potentially renewable
contingent on performance and availability of funds. The starting date is
flexible; earlier start dates are preferred.

To apply, send a *single PDF file* containing a cover letter, CV, contact
information for three references, and two relevant publications or
manuscripts to Jefferson Hall (hallje at si.edu). Rolling review of
applications will begin *15 August 2015*, and continue until the position
is filled.
