Hi Philip,
The draft looks great! I have a couple of comments to think about as we
go forward:
1. Governance Board. This seems to have too much Information
Management (IM) and not enough Science. It might be good to discuss why
the chair should be an IM and why there should be 7 IMs and 2 scientists
on the board. A better balance between IM and science might facilitate
broader engagement by sites in the process. The LTER Executive Board
(EB) has been discussing some type of rotation system where ALL sites
would serve on the governing board over time, as they do on the EB.
2. Project Manager. It’s not clear who hires, supervises and
evaluates this person. I’m assuming this would be the Governance Board,
but that should be spelled out a bit more clearly.
Great work! Thanks for pushing this along!
Peter

Dear Saran and Peter,
Attached is a draft summary document describing how we envision a
post-LNO IMC-led information management organization would look.
Clearly, much remains to be worked out and, as they say, “the devil is
in the detail.” However, I think we have broad agreement that this model
could be developed as an effective alternative to the old LNO structure.
We are having a full working group video-conference on Friday at 3PM EDT
to which you are both invited (details to follow). We will be happy to
discuss the document in more detail and answer any questions you have
then, but if you have something in particular you wish to know
beforehand feel free to ask.
Best regards,
- --
