Dear IMs,

Many of you might know that a working group of LTER IMs, USFS and EDI members worked over the past years on a strategy of sharing standardized climate and hydrological data.

In the past, this was achieved by LTER and FS sites contributing data to the climDB/hydroDB database. With no dedicated funding or designated owner, climDB/hydroDB has grown antiquated. In 2020, the working group developed a two-phase plan on how to modernize the approach, outlined in this document: https://github.com/lter/Clim-HydroDB-2.0/blob/master/planning_documents/Plan_climDBv2.pdf.<https://github.com/lter/Clim-HydroDB-2.0/blob/master/planning_documents/Email_DianeMcKnight_to_LTERCommunity_regarding_ClimDBplans.pdf>

This email is about Phase A, which is near completion. The work includes the (1) archiving of the entire climDB/hydroDB content as flat files in the EDI data repository, after which climDB/hydroDB will be sunsetted; (2) creating data packages for each site’s climDB/hydroDB content converted to ODM 1.1 format.

The packages from (2) above are now in staging. Site specific URLs can be found in this document: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t-38NjMF-LCZ8lpIpm5hLBTQ9G5TLRjXlm-sDoPkh6k/edit#gid=0. The packages can serve several purposes. They can be published directly to EDI (after review and clean up, see below). Or they can be templates for creating standardized met and hydro data for your site in ODM 1.1 format in the future.

The next steps for each site are:

  1. Review and edit metadata, clean up data
     * Should all sampling stations be included?

     * Check ODM tables for correctness. The structure is correct but content not necessarily.

        *   Update personnel

        * Update lat-lons for all stations

        * Methods table: Fill in Methods for observations

  2.  Publish/archive in EDI

  3. Possibly publish to CUAHSI (your choice)

Please contact Margaret O’Brien (margaret.obrien at ucsb.edu) and Susanne Grossman Clarke (grossmanclar at wisc.edu) if you have questions or need help with any of the steps above.

Information on Phase 2 will be available soon:

  * Creation of ODM 1.1 data packages for ongoing data

  * Contributions to CUAHSI, if desired

  * Met-hydro data activities at the IMC annual meeting
