Hello IMs -
ESA planning is well underway. I am sending along a few related
announcements, as an addendum to Stevan's email from IMExec containing
general info.
*Abstracts due soon:*
I'm sure you all know that *poster and talk abstracts are due next week:
Thursday, Feb 20 (COB, eastern time)*
*Open Science Section:*
This section is becoming reinvigorated. It currently has an interim
executive committee of 4 (me included), and will hold a business meeting at
ESA 2020 to set leadership and plan a path forward, and probably also a
social event. I encourage you to add this section to your ESA membership
(the first section is free, additional sections are $5; you can add them
any time). The sections have access to those funds.
*Data Help Desk:*
EDI is again very active in the Data Help Desk. Here is a blog post
describing the 2019 DHD:
https://www.esa.org/esablog/guest-posts/data-questions-data-help-desk-has-the-answers/
The DHD coordinates with ESA to provide demonstration activities for ESA
Career Central - a mini-theater usually within the exhibit hall. There are
slots open; contact Margaret if you would like to present one. Of course,
IMC members are welcome to populate the DHD any time. You all have
appropriate expertise, and we are always in need of subs to free up a bit
of time for us to attend a few talks (again, reply here if you are
interested).
*Abstract Reviewers:*
To build a robust and transparent review process while maintaining the
quality expected of presentations at ESA meetings, volunteers are needed to
review abstracts submitted for ESA 2020.
Acting as an abstract reviewer is a great way to add to your CV, and
improve your own abstracts! Any ESA member is eligible to serve, including
students and postdocs. No reviewer will review their own abstract.
Reviewers will complete reviews online over three weeks in March. Each
reviewer will be assigned 100-150 abstracts (fewer if there are more
volunteers); each abstract will have more than one reviewer. The Meetings
Committee considers reviewer ratings and comments in deciding which
abstracts to accept, and this groups' skills are essential this year --
where the theme is "Harnessing the Data Revolution". Email me and I'll pass
on your name.
best,
Margaret

Subject: [LTER-im] ESA and IMC 2020 meeting updates from IM Exec
To: <im at lternet.edu>
LTER IMs and Friends,
summary:
- ESA is always an excellent meeting but the theme this year is
particularly relevant to IMs. Please plan to participate in the entire
meeting.
- February 20 is the deadline to submit an abstract to present a talk
<https://www.esa.org/saltlake/call-for-contributed-oral-abstracts/> or
poster
<https://www.esa.org/saltlake/call-for-contributed-poster-abstracts/> at
ESA.
- Explore meeting registration options early. It may be more cost
effective to become an ESA member to receive membership pricing for meeting
registration. ESA membership is a reimbursable expense if it reduces the
overall cost of registration.
- Work with your site or other resource to address lodging expenses,
which will not be covered by the LNO or EDI.
- Contact Li Kui (li.kui at ucsb.edu) if you are interested to participate
in her session designed to help investigators publish their data.
Although August is still in the distance, deadlines loom and preparations
are underway for our annual IMC meeting in Salt Lake City. IM Exec would
like to bring to your attention the following items.
ESA is the preeminent meeting of ecologists, and we encourage IMs to take
advantage of this opportunity by attending some or, ideally, all of the
meeting (not just our IMC meeting). Recall that the theme of the meeting
this year is harnessing the ecological data revolution, so count on a lot
of relevant content. There will also be events to celebrate 40 years of
LTER in which you can participate or, at least, will not want to miss.
Depending on your position and/or income, it may be more cost effective for
you to become an ESA member to qualify for meeting registration member
pricing. If that is the case, you may register to become an ESA member as a
reimbursable meeting expense. Please save documentation that shows becoming
an ESA member to receive a membership rate on registration was less than
the cost of registering without becoming a member, and be aware that you
will be eligible for reimbursement after the meeting regardless of when you
sign up to become an ESA member. Please recall that the LNO/EDI are not
covering lodging at this year's meeting so work with your site or other
resource to address that expense.
If you are already an ESA member or sign up to become one as part of this
meeting, we encourage you to join the Open Science section
<https://www.esa.org/openscience/>. Participating in a section provides
resources to connect people working in that space. Additionally, sections
are being asked to recruit abstract reviewers, and the Open Science section
may want to recruit from among data managers. ESA members can select one
section at no cost when they join, and participate in additional sections
for a small fee.
Sharing your work will contribute toward a strong showing by the IMC. We
encourage IMs to consider submitting an abstract to present a talk
<https://www.esa.org/saltlake/call-for-contributed-oral-abstracts/> or
poster <https://www.esa.org/saltlake/call-for-contributed-poster-abstracts/>
at the meeting. There is an additional fee for oral presentations ($60) but
this is a reimbursable meeting expense. Meeting registrants can submit a
poster presentation as part of their registration costs. February 20 is the
deadline to submit an abstract. If you are planning to submit an abstract,
please send the details to IM Exec to help us coordinate meeting activities.
Below are some details of just a few events that we know will be of
interest:
- Li Kui is organizing a 90-minute workshop titled Get Your Data into a
Repository designed to help investigators publish their data. Please
contact Li (li.kui at ucsb.edu) if you are interested in assisting with
this important effort. In addition to helping contribute to data curation,
it should provide an opportunity to explore other approaches to publishing
data that may be valuable at your own site.
- Margaret O'Brien is organizing a session titled Working with LTER Data
that will feature a panel of pre-identified data managers who will comment
on approaches to publishing data, and field questions from the audience.
- Corinna Gries is organizing an Inspire session that will address reusing
ecological data to answer new questions - persistent problems and promising
progress.
More news and announcements are forthcoming but please do not hesitate to
contact IM Exec at any time with questions, concerns, or, especially,
ideas. In the meantime, please submit an abstract!
Thank you,
IM Exec
