Dear LTER Principal Investigators, Information Managers and Project
Managers--
The LTER Network is approaching its 40th anniversary and NSF plans to
recruit a team of outside reviewers for the program in the fall of 2019,
with the formal review to occur in early 2020. In order to provide the
reviewers with a clear and compelling picture of the Network’s
contributions over the past decade since the last review, the LTER
Executive Board has appointed a self-study committee.
The Science Council discussed the review extensively at the 2018 All
Scientists Meeting and it will also be the major theme of the 2019 Science
Council Meeting.
NSF has requested a specific format that includes individual site briefs
(approximately 2 pages) for each site and a more extensive self-study for
the Network as a whole. In addition to the two page “site briefs,” the
self-study committee is requesting specific information on personnel,
products, and leveraged funding for each site. We will use this
information, together with the narratives from the site briefs and
additional research, to build a substantive narrative for the Network as a
whole--as well as a quantitative “LTER by the numbers” summary.
*Full instructions and example spreadsheets for the requested information
are available at https://lternet.edu/2019-site-information-request/
<https://lternet.edu/2019-site-information-request/>*
*The page is password protected (40Y1nf0) so that users may safely submit
spreadsheets on the linked form.*
The committee needs to receive information from the sites by *March 15,
2019 *in order to prepare for the Science Council Meeting in May. We
appreciate how much work is involved in developing these documents and have
tried to ensure that the request is as clear, specific, and complete as
possible.
With much appreciation,
*The 40 Year Self-Study Committee*
