Dear LTER Information Managers:
Below (and attached as a .pdf) is a brief update about EDI activities. If you would like any more information about any of these items, please contact us!
Sincerely,
Kristin (on behalf of the whole EDI team)

New EDI Staff:

Information Manager:
Join us in welcoming Colin Smith to his new role as Information Manager for EDI! Colin has just completed his MS Degree in Ecology at UW-Madison, and is a skilled R programmer. He will, among other duties, work with LTER information managers to establish the IM Code Library, assist with automating data processing procedures, and perhaps do some training.

Training and Outreach Coordinator:
This half-time position is being advertised at UW-Madison. With a strong information science background, this staff member will develop and conduct online and in-person training on all aspects of the science data life cycle for new LTER IMs as well as scientists from LTREB, MSB, and OBFS. He/she will also develop content for the EDI web page (http://environmentaldatainitiative.org/). We hope to have this position filled by mid-April.

Progress!
EDI is making strides toward the goal of getting LTREB, MSB, and OBFS data sets into the EDI Repository (aka PASTA). Check it out at: https://portal.edirepository.org<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__portal-2Dd.edirepository.org_nis_home.jsp&d=AwMFaQ&c=1QsCMERiq7JOmEnKpsSyjg&r=4eAGuhb8SMDppFqhNxQT7g&m=k9Td3SFEWJa8GV3-Xu5rj3Jnro_np-Q06dBnZpftCNk&s=HYDgHUcyU30Q2wxGUVF7vpAPp3uAt-6W7EH-lmtZrIA&e=> ! Yes, this portal website may look familiar - it is basically the same structure as the LTER Data Portal, but designed with EDI in mind (and it will continue to evolve with time). To see new data sets, browse by the scope “edi”.

Mailing List
EDI has a mailing list now. You can subscribe here: http://environmentaldatainitiative.org/subscribe<http://environmentaldatainitiative.org/subscribe>

Travel funds for LTER, LTREB, OBFS, and MSB Information Managers:
Limited travel funds are available for information managers. Please see more information at: http://environmentaldatainitiative.org/travel. Participation in ESIP is encouraged. The next ESIP meeting will be July 25-28 in Bloomington, IN.

EDI, LTER NCO, DataONE Meeting
EDI, LTER NCO and DataONE will be meeting on April 13 to discuss opportunities for collaboration. In addition to EDI, LTER NCO and DataONE representatives, Peter Groffman, Gastil Gastil-Buhl and Wade Sheldon will participate in this meeting.

Upcoming

  1. Please watch for requests for comments as we work through topics such as the future of Clim/HydroDB, SiteDB, updates to the LTER data access policy, and others.
  2. EDI is formalizing its policies and implementation related to intellectual rights, which will be of interest to LTER.
