[LTER-im] LTER Data Access Policy Request for Comments

Hi Corinna,

PIE is going to adopt the CC-BY for intellectual rights as it has an attribution feature that expects data users to cite authors of the data.
CC-0 seems appropriate for data in the Data Portal if it has no intellectual rights stated.

A next step would be what the recommended citation should be and what elements from EML should be used to populate the citation in the Data Portal.

As an aside, going forward it will interesting to see how familiar reviewers and editors of journals become with data citations and whether the appropriate data citation has been used. Currently reviewers are mostly familiar with journal article citations and may comment about whether a citation/reference is more or less appropriate for the subject matter at hand. Will there be an increased burden on reviewers and editors to have as much familiarity with data citations and their accuracy and interpretation?

Thanks
Hap

Hi all,

Thanks to those who have commented already, this is just a quick reminder that the deadline is coming up. This will be discussed at the next EB meeting at the end of April.

Thanks

Dear all,

To work through issues that may require some changes to LTER data management practices we would like to employ a process of requesting comments from all of you.

We are starting with the LTER Data Access Policy. Background, reasons for changing it, and recommendations are outlined in the attached document. Please either discuss on this list, send your comments, concerns, questions to IMexec or directly to Corinna cgries at wisc.edu before April 15 th . If there is enough time this discussion will also be part of the agenda for the next Water Cooler.

We will collate all of the comments and formulate recommendations based on those comments to send to the EB before the Science Council meeting in May.

The same request for comments will go out the LTERexec mailing list. Please discuss with your PIs.

Thanks

EDI and NCO
