*Subject:* [Reu-geo] Talk: cross-program assessment of BIO REUs during COVID
Dear all,
Our colleague Ian Billick from the BIO REU community has shared that Dr.
Erin Dolan <https://www.bmb.uga.edu/directory/people/erin-dolan> from the
University of Georgia is going to give a zoom talk in a few weeks via Zoom.
I will attend, and I suspect that some of you will be interested in "going."
*How do we do this at a distance?! *
*Results from a cross-program evaluation of remote Research Experiences for
Undergraduates sites during COVID19 *
Friday Feb 26, 2:00 -3:00 pm ET
Zoom details to follow.
Undergraduate research experiences are critical for attracting and
preparing the next generation of research scientists. One of the longest
standing and most widely recognized forms of support for these experiences
are Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites funded by the
National Science Foundation (NSF). *When the COVID19 pandemic caused major
disruptions across higher education, 80% of REU sites funded by the NSF
Directorate for Biological Sciences opted to cancel their 2020 summer
programming; 20% - or 25 programs – opted to proceed. These programs
collaborated in a common evaluation to identify strengths and areas for
improvement of this unprecedented approach to undergraduate research, and
to compare the outcomes of remote REUs to those documented for in-person
research. *This session will describe the results of the common evaluation
and highlight program elements that emerged as particularly valuable for
students.
Happy Friday, and please take care of yourselves and avoid that darned
virus!
Val
