At the bottom of this message is an email from Clarisse to Marty
summarizing our two activities at the ASM – the Workshop on *Cultivating
Diversity & Inclusion at LTER Sites *and Committee Meeting, including links
to several associated documents. Please review these and come with ideas
for our next steps.

Agenda items will include:

   1. Follow up with students who participated in the REUxLTER program at
   the ASM (e.g., engaging them in recruitment efforts)
   2. Next steps for the REUxLTER initiative – NSF RCN-UBE proposal, other
   funding ideas
   3. Connecting to the Grad Student committee
   4. Follow-up on ideas generated at our Workshop and Committee Meeting at
   the ASM (see Clarisse’s summary), e.g., supporting sites with diversity
   plans and associated activities and resources, helping improve mentoring,
   etc.

Thanks,

Alan and Clarisse

Hi Marty!

The session was very well-attended (36 people signed in, from 18 sites +
NSF).

It was primarily an idea-sharing session, with the goal of communicating
some best practices that have worked at individual sites for discussion and
greater use. Our topics were: 1) cultivating cultural competence at sites
through grants and through leveraged university resources, 2) enhancing
staff and student diversity, and 3) creating a site diversity plan. The
slides we used are here
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__drive.google.com_open-3Fid-3D1cHMiKtl4oaK1XZJQTfA6ETIp7KUQJTWeP-2D5oxvIENvI&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=Ot7KtlkSGyTe27BZpdMA-foMD2tcJDCyElx1iDqGyB8&s=zZesapYmzF0MLB2fhHLLY_XFoKHW4GHOzYKPuLY1mPs&e=>
and the outline we followed is here
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__drive.google.com_open-3Fid-3D1gCOuxlODGBVKleFBhxgVndGls2L8ne7jCWczkD42cVg&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=Ot7KtlkSGyTe27BZpdMA-foMD2tcJDCyElx1iDqGyB8&s=xokoZ9Ke3h3-pgHS_xCXV0Lwn9724xiTUz8qgsuFyAI&e=>.
It was great that 4 different LTER sites presented, including two graduate
students who are active in the LTER Diversity Committee.

At the end of the session, we opened up the white board to suggestions from
attendees (they are copied here
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__drive.google.com_open-3Fid-3D1rYJvJq0U3d5G-5F2gJXOGCgS3ZBsEvXR-5F5&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=Ot7KtlkSGyTe27BZpdMA-foMD2tcJDCyElx1iDqGyB8&s=OgdippyoHmk-5pOxqzkUb_ZV4NH5PJLz-qWIFDRG4k4&e=>)
as to how the Diversity Committee should be spending its annual funds to
best serve the Network. They had a variety of suggestions, with many
related to diversity & inclusion training for research mentors, and another
notable few that involved specific types of support for underrepresented
students working at sites, including students who want some resources and
opportunity to spread the word about LTER with other underrepresented
students.

As a follow-on, Alan and I co-hosted an ad-hoc meeting of the diversity
committee + additional interested folks the next day, which was a nice way
for us to further discuss some of the ideas that had been put on the
whiteboard. The notes from that meeting are here
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__docs.google.com_document_d_1SdIfvQLoXcPgvc2BtjV36AKHSt639bPLp8F8AZ5QE-2DI_edit&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=Ot7KtlkSGyTe27BZpdMA-foMD2tcJDCyElx1iDqGyB8&s=C06ny7N5aW_jQ-HLoESp99eLQdts8HOB54CS9g9P3iA&e=>.
The Diversity Committee will continue to prioritize and work on these ideas
in the coming year.

Please let me know if there is more I can do.

Thanks!

Clarisse

Dear Clarisse,

Now that a few weeks have passed since the LTER All Scientists' Meeting,
I'm following up with workshop organizers to find out how your workshops
went and what sorts of initiatives might have emerged from the meeting. Not
every workshop was intended to produce a new proposal or working group, so
don't feel that you need to develop a formal report -- but we would love to
get some basic feedback if you do have progress to report.

We'll use your information to:

   1. Flesh out our report to NSF on the meeting. NSF makes a significant
   investment in the ASM and deserves an accounting of results.
   2. Help inform the design of future All Scientists' Meetings
   3. Spread the word about any new initiatives that might benefit from
   additional LTER partners. With so many good workshops, not everyone could
   attend everything that interested them.

You are listed as the organizer of the following workshop:

*Cultivating Diversity & Inclusion at LTER Sites*

Please shoot me an email with a few notes on how the workshop went, what
came (or is coming) of it, and whether you intend to continue pursuing the
topic or are seeking additional collaborators.

If you have a group that wants to continue meeting, we can put together a
mailing list, a team google drive, a shout-out to the Network, or set up a
standing videoconference link for you.

yet filled it our, your participation would be appreciated.
