Hi all.,
Below are some opportunities for educational supplements. Please let me
know if you are interested in pursuing any of these. The deadline is 1
December. We have submitted successful RET and ROA proposals in the
past that I am happy to pass along as a guide to anyone who might be
interested in taking a lead on a proposal (past proposals have only been
a couple of pages).

Dear All,
You recently received -- or may have received -- a message from NSF
announcing diverse educational supplements that can be requested by PIs
of active awards. These supplements include Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (REUs), Research Experiences for Teachers (RETs),
Research Opportunity Awards (ROAs), and Research ? (something that
begins with A) for High School Students (RAHSS).
Several of you have written to ask if LTER awards are eligible for these
supplements, and the answer is yes with one exception. Most of you
already receive funds for 2 REU students as part of your parent awards.
LTER will not provide additional REU funds in addition to these two. The
remaining categories are open. The deadline is 1 December. The LTER
budget cannot cover a large number of these requests, so it will be
important for you to think about what makes a competitive request. For
the RET supplements, I attach a score sheet that someone in DEB
developed a while ago. What we most want to know is how a research
experience for a teacher will be translated into a meaningful
educational activity for him or her and his school or class.
ROA supplements are provided to individuals who have not been able to
maintain an active research career because they have worked at primarily
undergraduate institutions or community colleges. Funds are provided for
this individual to work with a researcher, usually during the summer, to
begin to get a research program off the ground again, to establish new
connections, and to be re-introduced to the research community. Funds
are not intended for recent PhDs who have strong publication records but
have landed a job at an undergraduate institution, or for others at
undergraduate institutions who have been able to maintain a reasonable
research program. They are not intended to provide a bit of start-up
money for someone previously associated with one or more LTER projects.
We want to see that you mentor promising individuals who are striving to
enter or re-enter the mainstream research community.
Let me know if you have any additional questions,
Saran
