‌ ‌ Familiar Faces Friday Enjoy these short virtual updates from Hubbard Brook. Geoff with Andrew and Hazel Geoff Wilson Field Technician, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies Hello Hubbard Brook friends, I’ve never written to all of you all at once before, so let me start by emphasizing how fortunate I feel being a part of this group, and that I sincerely wish this finds you and your loved ones weathering this pandemic ok. I’m writing from home (surprise), with Hazel in front of me at her desk and Andrew in the other room at his. I’ve claimed the kitchen table, in front of the pellet stove. I’ve been working with Mark Green and Tammy Wooster analyzing spectrophotometer data that Tammy started measuring in the weekly stream samples a few years ago, making slow progress improving my skills with R and understanding dissolved organic carbon. Hazel spends a bunch of time playing on Scratch, which is a coding activity designed for kids, so we get to pat each other on the back when we get our codes to run correctly. Andrew’s got plenty going on and I’m planning on calling on him for some GIS help soon. We are managing together well. I’ve still been in the woods at Hubbard Brook a bit, although less than usual. I’ve been walking up to around weir 5 each week measuring the last of the snow and frost in the lower snow gradient plots, with Tammy doing the higher ones for me when she’s out on rounds. It looks like I’ll be able to continue the long-term collections I typically do, which will be the monthly lysimeters and gas samples, both from W1 and W6. The pandemic has made me acutely aware of how good I have it. Like much of the country, in my local community most businesses are closed and many people are out of work, undoubtedly struggling financially and emotionally. I get to still have a meaningful job as a small part of this wonderful Hubbard Brook community and am thankful for that. I am disappointed that the field season will be disrupted for many of you and will look for opportunities to be helpful. I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you again. -Geoff Anthea Lavallee Executive Director, Hubbard Brook Research Foundation Lindsey Rustad Research Ecologist/US Forest Service Team Leader, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest The Hubbard Brook Research Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study.
