2016-2017 Annual Department of Geography Awards Colloquium

Date: THURSDAY May 25

Colloquium Time: 3:30-4:45

Place: Buchanan 1930

Speaker: Libe Washburn, Professor, Department of Geography, UC Santa Barbara

Title: Drones in Environmental Research: Applications in Coastal Oceanography

Abstract:
"Drones have emerged as an important new technology in many areas of environmental research, especially those related to aerial mapping and monitoring. In oceanography, the use of autonomous vehicles has become widespread and include such innovations as profiling floats, long-duration surface vehicles, and ocean gliders, and propeller powered underwater vehicles. In this seminar recent developments at UCSB will be described concerning the use of aerial drones in coastal oceanographic research. In particular, newly developed drone-based approaches will be discussed for calibrating ocean current-measuring radars and collecting sub-surface water samples in the coastal ocean. Other ongoing development efforts and future research directions will also be discussed."

Awards will be presented first, followed by Dr. Washburn's talk.
