Hi everyone,

Werner Eckert is a biogeochemist at the Kinneret Laboratory, Israel, and is visiting Sally MacIntyre's lab.

His seminar will be in the 2nd Floor Conference Room MSRB at noon tomorrow.

Methane cycling in the Sea of Galilee

W. Eckert

Abstract:

Subtropical Lake Kinneret, the biblical Sea of Galilee, is thermally stratified between March and January. During the stratified period the lake is forced by strong daily westerly winds that cause intensive internal wave activity and the formation of a prominent benthic boundary layer. Microbiological succession in the hypolimnion is linked closely to this physical regime leading to a distinct evolution of sulfide and dissolved methane as the result of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis in the water column and the sediments. The role of both processes in organic matter decomposition is addressed and related to primary productivity and settling flux of particulate organic carbon. The rates of SO42- reduction and CH4 production in the sediments are obtained via modeling of porewater profiles of the hydrochemical parameters involved. Recent evidence is presented that suggests the occurrence of anaerobic methane oxidation in the deeper sedimentary zone of the lake.
