The following PhD opportunities are available at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and at the University of Liverpool under the Manchester and Liverpool Doctoral Training Program:
Mega deltas: hydrodynamic, sediment transport, and morphological evolution with climate change <https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/studentships-earth-atmosphere-ocean/studentships/ocean/megadeltashydrodynamicsedimenttransportandmorphologicalevolutionwith.html> :
Supervisors: Dr Nicoletta Leonardi (University of Liverpool) | Dr Lucy Bricheno (National Oceanography Centre) | Dr Laurent Amoudry (National Oceanography Centre)
River Deltas are vulnerable to both anthropogenic and natural changes such as sea level rise, changes in sediment supply, hurricane activity, and urbanization. Researchers all around the world are collaborating and putting great efforts to better understand the hydrodynamic and morphological behaviour of river deltas. In this regard numerical models are useful tools and in combination with field data and aerial images allow investigating the evolution of river deltas at a range of time scales as well as under different climate change scenarios. The goal of this project is to investigate the hydrodynamic and morphological behaviour of river deltas under different external forcing. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta in Bangladesh will be the main test case in combination with more idealized scenarios which will be used to obtain results more general and extendable to river deltas all around the world.
Applicants should possess, or expect to graduate with, a first class or upper 2nd class degree in one of the following: civil or mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, meteorology, or similar.

An experimental study on the effect of tidal wetting on salt marsh resilience to sea level rise and wind waves<https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/studentships-earth-atmosphere-ocean/studentships/ocean/anexperimentalstudyontheeffectoftidalwettingonsaltmarshresilienceto.html>:
Supervisors: Dr Nicoletta Leonardi (University of Liverpool) | Dr James Cooper (University of Liverpool) | Prof. Andy Plater (University of Liverpool)
Salt marshes are vegetated surfaces located at the interface between the marine and terrestrial environment. They are among the most productive ecosystems on earth, and provide valuable ecosystem services. However, salt marsh survival is threatened by wind waves and sea level rise and large salt marsh losses have been already documented worldwide. While there is a vast literature on salt marsh dynamics, the combined effect of storm surges and tides, and in particular the influence of wetting and drying on marsh properties are poorly understood even if they largely influence the ecology and morphology of these coastal environments. The newly refurbished, state-of-the-art Hydraulic laboratory at Liverpool is equipped for the study of erosion processes in coastal areas. Applicants should possess, or expect to graduate with, a first class or upper 2nd class degree in civil engineering, physical geography, ocean science, ecology or similar.
