Hi NISAC members,
I just wanted to share some working group and ad-hoc lunch working group sessions for the upcoming ASM that should be of particular interest to NISAC, especially NISAC scientists. Having scientific input into the process of the LTER data management system is extremely important. It is unclear what role NISAC will have in the future, but it is clear that serving science needs and priorities is critical to development of a robust information management organization. Please consider attending some of these sessions. See descriptions below.

"Finding NIMO" - Exploring ideas for a new Network Information Management Organization<http://asm2015.lternet.edu/working-groups/finding-nimo-exploring-ideas-new-network-information-management-organization>
The LTER Information Management Committee (IMC) has been exploring the feasibility of moving the network information management coordination and provision to the IM community as a possible alternative to a new Network Office for LTER data management.
We have developed an initial management model that aims to retain the best parts of the existing infrastructure while also being able to accommodate new ideas. We invite our science colleagues to help us the define the processes that will ensure we meet the needs of the LTER network going forward. In particular, we want to know:
* How can we ensure we have a clear understanding of science needs and priorities?
* How will we gather this input, i.e., what questions do we need to ask and of whom?
* How can we encourage scientists to be more engaged in information management?
* How should we balance science needs vs. technical needs within a limited budget?
* What are the criteria for prioritizing information management projects that support site science?

* This ad hoc meeting will be to follow up on the developing Data Center <discussion from the Sunday IMC meeting>. We plan to focus on administrative aspects. We expect to have participants from the EB and IMC.

The LTER-CO will need to rely on various (managed) databases to support a number of its functions. One of the commitments of the LTER-CO is to "Maintain close working relationships with the LNO Data Office to assure seamless data and information sharing, and clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities in training, communication, and outreach". This meeting will establish that relationship and potential harmonization at this early point when the particulars of the DO are still being defined.
