Hurricane Maria Coverage

Klaus Biesenbach, friend/neighbor to El Verde and director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, visited Puerto Rico shortly after hurricane Maria hit. Biesenbach, along with photographer Christopher Gregory (former classmate of Omar Gutierrez del Arroyo), toured El Yunque with Jess Zimmerman and also visited impacted artists throughout the island.

Dr. Tom Mote Receives Award

The AAG Climate Specialty Group announced this morning that they have a tie for their Lifetime Achievement Award: "We had excellent nominees for this year's Climate Specialty Group (CSG) Lifetime Achievement Award. I am pleased to announce that we have two awardees this year due to a tie in the ranking. The awardees are Dr. Thomas Mote, University of Georgia, and Dr. Daniel Leathers, University of Delaware. Congratulations Dr. Mote and Dr. Leathers." Congratulations to Dr. Mote of UGA as well as Dr. Leathers for their excellent work over the years!"

Undergradute student receives award

Jaclyn Everly, undergraduate student in the Donald Yee lab at The University of Southern Mississippi, was awarded "Best Undergraduate Presentation" in the Medical, Urban, & Veterinary Entomology section at the Ecological Society of America meeting held recently in Denver, Colorado. Jaclyn conducted her research at El Verde this past summer on how disturbances affect Heliconia insect communities. Congratulations, Jaclyn!

LUQ Schoolyard News

On Saturday, January 13, LUQ
held their third Teacher Data Jam
Workshop at the Forward Learning
Company. The participants
included seventeen dedicated and
adventurous educators and an
excellent staff from the Forward
Learning Company. It is essential
to thank the scientists and experts
of Luquillo CZO, USGS, Concord
Consortium and Luquillo LTER, who facilitated the process and provided the group with workshop data. Special thanks to Dr. Steven McGee for taking the lead of introducing the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) in Spanish!



Schoolyard teacher recognized
Glenda Almodovar received the "Mentor of the Year" award at the Vex Robotics competition. Glenda has been involved in Schoolyard LTER since 2009. Felicidades, Glenda!
