Dear IMs, I’ve included the announcement of our fifth offering of our popular sensor workshop at the UNM Sevilleta Field Station, which was initially funded by an LNO training supplement in 2012. Naturally, we’ve had an overwhelming majority of LTER-affiliated participants in past courses, and this year, we’ve invited NTL IM Mark Gahler, a previous participant and Arduino expert, as an instructor. We are accepting applicants on a rolling basis, and the course is already >50% full. Please share with interested parties at your respective sites and/or consider applying yourself.

We are accepting applications for the 2020 offering of our Methods in Environmental Data Acquisition short course, otherwise known as the Remote Data Acquisition (RDA) Sensor Training Workshop (https://unmsevilletafieldstation.wordpress.com/rda/).

This intensive course will be held May 31st through June 6th, 2020 at the University of New Mexico’s Sevilleta Field Station<https://unmsevilletafieldstation.wordpress.com/> in beautiful central New Mexico. Participants will be provided with a comprehensive and affordable introduction to the major aspects of field-based environmental data acquisition with an emphasis on hands-on learning. By using a combination of field demonstrations, lectures, hands-on activities, and discussions, we will cover several topics fundamental to the remote acquisition of environmental sensor data:

  *   Basic electronics
  * Photovoltaic power for remote instrumentation
  *   Sensor theory and application
  * Campbell Scientific datalogger wiring and programming
  * Arduino microcontrollers for environmental sensing
  *   TCP/IP networking and Wi-Fi telemetry systems

As in previous years, the course fee is all-inclusive (with the exception of airfare), and will cover participant lodging, meals, and shuttle service to/from the Albuquerque airport.

Anyone interested in the topic of remote environmental sensor data acquisition is encouraged to apply. To find more detailed information about the course (e.g., draft agenda, course fees, logistics) and to apply, visit our website: https://unmsevilletafieldstation.wordpress.com/rda/<http://sevfs.unm.edu/courses/rda/>. We will begin reviewing applications and sending acceptance letters on a rolling basis on February 3rd. Applications will be accepted until March 31st. The maximum number of participants we can accommodate is 20, so submit your application early to guarantee your spot!

Please pass along this announcement to anyone you think would benefit from this course. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me directly at rfbrown at unm.edu<mailto:rfbrown at unm.edu>.
