Greetings IMC,
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and participate in the November VWC with guests Julien Brun and Allison Horst, who presented on the R package they have developed to teach statistical concepts using LTER datasets. If you missed their presentation, you can find the recording and notes in the shared IMC Google Drive<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11EELowsqTqMPssj5N17G4EKb1CGMuoZt?usp=sharing>.
Following up, they are seeking information from the IMC regarding their request for suitable datasets for this project.
Overview: The R package will contain sample datasets collected by LTER Network sites (1 dataset from each site) with the primary use as teaching datasets (not for research purposes) for introductory data science and statistics courses. Examples of skills they would like to highlight using these datasets are basic data wrangling (filtering, reshaping, dealing with missing values, etc), data visualization, hypothesis testing (e.g. t-tests, ANOVA, chi-squared), and linear regression.
Some ideal dataset characteristics they are looking for include:
*
Easy to understand variables
*
Charismatic / well-known species or topics for learners from different fields
*
Can be subsetted into a sample (e.g., just selecting several sites or species)
*
Does not have to be tabular
*
Spatial data (e.g., csv with coordinates)
*
Plot survey data
*
CC0 or CC-BY License (or at least could be changed to these licenses)
They have created this shared Googlesheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EwFdjDLJwAn8MACtzjCClSk87d7Z3wtZVWPrNwCDwmI/edit#gid=0> and are inviting members of the IMC to recommend dataset(s) for their respective LTER site by Friday, January 15th 2021, in preparation for having capstone students begin working on this project later in January. The included examples are for sample datasets they have used to create the package infrastructure, but if IMs have other data to recommend, they welcome alternative options. Do not hesitate to submit multiple datasets per LTER site.
If you have specific questions or concerns about this project, please feel free to reach out directly to Allison and Julien, who are both cc-d here.
Thanks in advance for your contribution(s), on behalf of IM Exec, Julien Brun, and Allison Horst.
