Dear USLTER PIs, site managers, and information managers--
I'm forwarding e-mail from Michael Mirtl and the ILTER Network regarding
the status of information entered into the ILTER Site database.
Approximately one-third of our sites are still missing substantial portions
of data and ILTER has established a *SEPTEMBER 10* deadline for
registration.
To access and update USLTER information, go to https://data.lter-europe.
net/deims/ and log in with the US credentials: US / ?US80
I know that some sites have sub-sites listed separately from the main LTER
site. Please associate those sites with your main LTER site by choosing the
main LTER as the parent site under the site hierarchy section of the
sub-site.
If you run into problems that prevent you from entering reasonable data,
I'll be happy to compile a list of questions or concerns to address with
David Blankman. Thanks for making the effort to get our data completed.
Best,
Marty

Subject: [ilter_all] Status of LTER site documentation & ultimate deadline
10th September 2016
*Dear ILTER colleagues, Dear LTER network coordinators, Dear LTER site
coordinators,*
FIRST OF ALL:
- Thanks to all of you, who contributed to the reliable
documentation of our global site network!
- Thanks to the technical team, which continuously improved DEIMS
(Christoph as leading programmer, David, Johannes)
HISTORY:
- Strategic decision at the ILTER CC 2015 Italy on LTER site
documentation and mandatory attributes
- DEIMS upgrade and launch in April 2016
- Main announcement (see below) and communication & reminders at
the regional and national level (original deadline: 30th June)
STATUS:
- We just finished several data base extracts and basic analyses
of completeness across regions and countries
- About 40% of the member countries are close to complete (one
country 100%)
- About 30% of the member countries have completed a good part of
their sites, but several are still missing
- About 30% of the member countries show severe gaps (15% did not
respond at all)
Please, find the summary table below.
- The higher up you find yourself in the table, the higher the
need for action.
- Towards the bottom you can encounter the documentation champions
(congratulations!)
è We used the „Percentage of national LTER sites, which are lacking more
than 30% of information“ as key indicator rather than the mean level of
documentation. A more detailled table will be sent to the national LTER
coordination teams to support targeted action & response.
We encourage *all site coordinators* of nationally agreed LTER sites to at
least enter DEIMS, get to their site(s) and do a short final check, which
has become a simple exercise:
1. To see the attributes, which have not been filled for your site,
simply try to save your site dataset.
*2. **If your site is lacking critical information (mandatory
attributes), DEIMS will provide you with an error message including the
names of the field. *Please take care, that the „Site manager“ name is
provided in any case (might not create an error message).
However, the ultimate goal for your site documentation should be to reach
100%. In order to do so follow the instructions in the site form.
When saving the site dataset you will be prompted on still missing
information (any attributes, which have not been filled).
*Ultimate deadline:*
As the team needs some time before the ILTER Open Science Meeting and
Coordinating Committee meeting in Kruger NP only sites and data can be
considered, which have been inserted into DEIMS before
*10th September 2016*
è *Effects of lacking site documentation:*
- *sites, which are not registered and properly documented (at
least all mandatory attributes)*
o *will not be shown in ILTER field site maps*
o *will not be considered in ILTER field site statistics (sites per
country…), distribution analyses (across biomes…) etc.*
o *will not be promoted and supported (e.g. suggestions to be used in
projects etc.)*
- *so, besides the effects at the site level any missing site is
weakening the entire network. This would specifically be a pitty in case of
sites, which do exist, but don´t appear inspite of the small effort to
register (in comparison to the effort to set up an operate an LTER site)*
- *national networks without sites should report to the ILTER CC,
why they do not have field sites (actually a prerequisite for national LTER
networks)*
GOOD LUCK!
Michael Mirtl
