Dear EOC friends, especially those in the citizen science working group!

You're all invited to an HFR webinar this Wednesday, the final session of a virtual spring PD series for our teachers.

HFR Schoolyard Ecology teacher Maria Blewitt will present the results of her recently-defended doctoral dissertation, which explored how HFR Schoolyard Ecology teachers use citizen science projects to build scientific literacy.

More info is below!

Just contact Pamela (psnow at fas.harvard.edu<mailto:psnow at fas.harvard.edu>) if you'd like to the Zoom info.

Cheers,
Clarisse

Subject: Register Now for Session 6 Spring Workshop with Dr. Maria Blewitt-Citizen Science Research
Importance: High

Schoolyard Teachers and Staff:

I hope you are able to join us this Wednesday to hear Maria Blewitt share her doctoral research on Citizen science and try out a new learning activity she is piloting ....

Session 6: Spring Workshop for Teachers
What does Research on Citizen Science in Schools Say?

Who: Dr. Maria Blewitt, Science Teacher at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Ma. All HF Schoolyard Teachers and other Science Educators are welcome to participate in this free session.
What: Maria Blewitt's doctoral research focused on how Schoolyard Ecology teachers use HF citizen science projects for scientific literacy. This study looked at scientific literacy as the use of inquiry, nature of science and socio-scientific issues in the classroom. The teachers studied showed strong evidence of using inquiry and socio-scientific issues in the classroom. Nature of science was used less frequently and more implicitly. Part of this presentation will give an overview of the research results, and part of the presentation will give some ideas for explicitly using nature of science with the Harvard Forest projects.
All workshop participants will have a chance to pilot a new learning activity designed to engage students in practicing the Nature of Science NGSS standards/practices. We look forward to having teachers try out this new activity and provide feedback and further ideas of ways their students can engage in learning activities that improve understanding of the Nature of Science.
When: Wednesday May 20, 2020 from 3pm-4pm EDT
How: Reply to this email to register for this free teacher workshop session. Provide your name, school name, Schoolyard project name if you lead a project currently, and your grade level in the email to register. Pamela will send you the Zoom link, password, etc. to join us remotely.

AGENDA:
3:00p.m. Introduction to research and session activity by Dr. Maria Blewitt
3:20p.m. Participants try a Nature of Science learning activity
3:50p.m. Discussion between educators and Dr. Blewitt
4:00p.m. Teachers complete Survey to provide important feedback. Formal program ends. Maria and HF staff will remain online for further discussion as needed.
