For those of you who are running virtual REU programs this summer -- AGU
has announced a session specifically on the related challenges and
opportunities. AGU will be mainly virtual this year, so you can submit an
abstract without needing to commit to travel in the first week of December.
Abstract submission window is now through the end of July.

Subject: [Reu-geo] AGU Session: Challenges and Unexpected Opportunities in
Running a Virtual REU Program
To: reu-geo at mailman.ucar.edu <reu-geo at mailman.ucar.edu>

Please consider submitting an abstract to the following session of the Fall
AGU meeting. We hope this will be an opportunity to share success stories
on how the many obstacles of a virtual REU have been overcome! Invited
speakers are Val Sloan (UCAR) on the community’s response to the pandemic
and Wendy Carande (CU) on the challenges of virtual mentoring.

Abstract deadline is July 29th.

Challenges and Unexpected Opportunities in Running a Virtual REU Program

The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly struck the world just as Research Experience
for Undergraduates (REU) programs were accepting students and planning for
the summer. Program managers were faced with difficult choices ranging
from cancellation to converting to a virtual program. This session invites
contributions on running virtual educational research internships, and in
particular the conversion from an in-person effort to one that is entirely
online. Sample topics might include what challenges did programs overcome?
Were there new and unexpected opportunities that stemmed from this change?
What resources can be shared with other programs? What resources will be
needed if social distancing policies return in the future? Can lessons
learned from this experience be used to increase flexibility for future REU
programs? How does the feedback from students attending virtual REU
programs in 2020 compare to previous in-person programs?
