[LTER-education] open houses at LTER sites

We used to hold a fall open house at KBS but found that attendance dropped off over the years (and after we quit giving out free pumpkins!) One thing we did that worked well was have a ‘’passport’’ book that participants got and got stamps in at each station. I can’t remember if there was a reward for filling it out (going to each station). But people were into them.

Subject: [LTER-education] open houses at LTER sites

Hi, LTER education friends,

Do any of you ever manage open houses for the public at your site?

We are currently planning our first event like this (an invite-only open house event for 250+ friends/supporters, which will likely include some families) in many years, and we could use advice on basic logistics -- like how to set a schedule that allows people to flow through the various indoor stations and field tours we’ve got planned. We could also use advice on things that DON’T work well! Happy for any and all wisdom via email or phone. :)

Thanks in advance,
Clarisse

Hi EOC,
For anyone with REU programs and interested in training (sensitivity, discrimination, workplace climate, etc) with assessment:
I had an interesting conversation this morning with Michael Hubenthal of IRIS<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.iris.edu_hq_staff_employee_hubenthal&d=DwMFAg&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=f2hw8JF-iwMfF7tp09YTYWZ5Odv7D3UHk-88ke2NIYg&s=XpfsvzfCnWPXpjHeVuskI5v0zvgL75RVaEE0Blx8wRY&e=>.
He and colleagues have developed an Anti-Harassment, Discrimination, and Non-Fraternization training (and assessments thereof) targeted for REUs.
It looks like good work and was derived in part from ADVANCEGeo<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__serc.carleton.edu_advancegeo_index.html&d=DwMFAg&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=f2hw8JF-iwMfF7tp09YTYWZ5Odv7D3UHk-88ke2NIYg&s=8mzmK_Fxop8WtmuUMajAY9Oi3sIgMQYBXFRb2QY_Jvg&e=>'s work on this front.
Michael is happy to have others use the curriculum they have developed (currently ~2 hours), and they are particularly interested in having REU programs join a pilot they are running this year.
More information, including options to
1) Read about the curriculum.
2) Download the entire curriculum as well as their REU site's program handbook.
3) See the results from the 2019 pilot (2 sites) last summer.
4) Register to learn more about the summer 2020 pilot (target is 10+ REU sites, formal or informal).
are provided here: https://www.iris.edu/hq/internship/anti_harassment_curriculum<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.iris.edu_hq_internship_anti-5Fharassment-5Fcurriculum&d=DwMFAg&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=JIxZ-AFpuKPv2mz1PYfwckARh16Laz2TrneksBiVXcE&m=f2hw8JF-iwMfF7tp09YTYWZ5Odv7D3UHk-88ke2NIYg&s=q-RIq07okXfeF0Dy2v9KfpllLicPIUzwnuaVjhwaU-o&e=>

One major bonus of this work is that assessment is built into the design. Michael has an IRB through his institution that allows him to collect and analyze assessment data from participants at any site (with permission).
Here are the criteria to participate in the pilot:

  1. Have REUs
  2. Use the curriculum (modified is ok) and administer assessment
  3. Dept Chair signature to allow site members to participate under Michael's institution's IRB.
  4. Have policies in place for REU program or be willing to adopt a policy by summer's program. (His can be adopted and modified.)

Please let me or Michael know if you'd like to discuss this further.

Thanks,
Cora
