[LTER-diversity] January 18th LTER DEI Committee Meeting

Hi all,
Marty can elaborate if needed, but if we have to go through the official channels for getting formal activities at ASM, the due dates and types of proposed activities can be found here: https://lternet.edu/2022-all-scientists-meeting/ <https://lternet.edu/2022-all-scientists-meeting/>. If a “track" of workshops is of interest, those proposals are due the day of our next meeting (Feb 15). For the other types of activities, we’d have more time. (I haven’t heard anything about keynote speaker selection.)

Dear LTER DEI reps,
Welcome back to the spring semester. I hope you had a restful break, even with the newest challenges from COVID. To get us back into action for the spring semester, we will spend our January meeting - next Tuesday, the 18th - checking in and getting situated for this semester's meetings.

We aim to
Share an overview of priority topics for our spring sessions
Check in on timing (Does our meeting schedule still work for you?)
Hear site highlights and updates
Let working groups check in to identify their prior progress and next step for February's working groups meeting
Begin discussing how we want to intersect with Network-wide ASM (Sept 2022) - hosting sessions, suggesting speakers, etc.
Also, we encourage you to invite others from your site who would like to learn more about our committee or join our regular meetings. As a representative committee, we are required to have one rep per site on the DEI committee; however, our meetings are open to others in the Network who'd like to be part of DEI discussions. By recruiting more attendees, we may be able to distribute the burden of work and accomplish more. If you have a DEI committee at your site, please consider inviting that broader group to join this month's meeting. They are welcome at future meetings, but we hope that this one will be a good starter session.

As always

"Science is the process that takes us from confusion to understanding in a manner that's precise, predictive and reliable - a transformation, for those lucky enough to experience it, that is empowering and emotional. We must embark on a cultural shift that places science in its rightful place...as an indispensable part of what makes life worth living." -B. Greene
