Dear LTER PIs, REU Coordinators, and DEI contacts,

I want to alert you to two funding opportunities that may be
especially relevant and for which there are upcoming webinars on December
15. While the current deadlines are short for developing cross-site
proposals (early January), both programs are expected to continue after
this year and both provide strong opportunities for building relationships
with community colleges and primarily undergraduate serving institutions.

Thanks,
Marty

As you may know, BRC-BIO
<https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/building-research-capacity-new-faculty-biology-brc-bio>
and RaMP
<https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/research-and-mentoring-postbaccalaureates-biological-sciences-ramp>
are new programs offered by the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF)
Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO).

BRC-BIO is intended to enhance research capacity of and broaden
participation among new faculty of biology at minority-serving institutions
(MSIs), predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs), and other
universities and colleges that are not among the nation’s most
research-intensive and resourced institutions.

Some key information from the BRC-BIO solicitation
<https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2022/nsf22500/nsf22500.pdf>:

   - Primary investigators must be at the *Assistant Professor rank* (or
   tenure-track equivalent) with service for no more than 3 years by the
   submission date.
   - Proposed projects should help enable the establishment of research
   programs that will be competitive for future research proposals to NSF
   (e.g., CAREER) or other agencies. Projects should enrich undergraduate
   research experiences and thereby grow the STEM workforce.
   - Projects can include biology-focused research collaborations
   among those in academia, or partnerships with industry or other
   non-academic partners that advance the PI’s research program.
   - *First submission window*:  January 03 – January 31, 2022 (*second
   submission window* is June 01 – June 30, 2022)

RaMP awards will establish networks to support full-time research,
mentoring, and training for recent college graduates who have had few or no
research or training opportunities during college in research fields
typically supported by the BIO. Cohorts for each award are expected to be
between 8 and 12 postbaccalaureate graduates per year over the course of 3
years.

Some key information from the RaMP solicitation
<https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=505965&ods_key=nsf22506>
:

· Proposals are expected to create strong evidence-based and inclusive
mentorship programs that will advance the goal of creating a competitive
and highly representative STEM workforce in the U.S.

· Networks are expected to involve and facilitate communication and
training among mentors and mentees from different organizations,
institutions, and/or departments.

· Proposals submitted under this solicitation should focus on
research-based inquiry projects that include analytical and technical
training and professional development opportunities.

·      *Proposal deadline* is January 20, 2022.
