Hello! Remember when we met this winter and brainstormed having a join
meeting between Education and Outreach and Communications? Well, we had it
penciled in for June and here we are, with the meeting scheduled for June
4, 2020 at 3pm EST.

Cora and I are planning to facilitate a group share focused on *supporting
students (ex. graduate and undergraduate) to participate in science
communication.
We
intend to do a short time of ‘silent documenting’ when we can all
contribute ideas and current practices to a shared document, followed by
discussion. We’d love to have any representation from the Communications
Committee participate, we won’t put you on the spot to present anything
other than introducing yourself. We also welcome your feedback on the
document and discussion points!

Please share this invitation with other members of the Communications
Committee!

coordination

Hi All

Thanks for the meeting. We covered some great ideas and it’s fun to see the
energy. Marty, thanks for organizing us and for the notes.

Our site has its LTER renewal proposal due on March 5. All of my bandwidth
is consumed with the proposal between now and early March. I’m supportive
of the joint-meeting efforts but realistically will not be able to devote
myself to the effort until after March 5. I am supportive of you all moving
ahead and will catch up in March.

Lina

coordination

Hi all,

I've deposited my cleaned up notes in the google drive folders for both the
education/outreach committee (executive team notes/2019) and the
communications committee (notes and agendas/2019).

I'm copying here the last couple of paragraphs, which I think is a fair
assessment of where we ended up:

Lina proposes that the two committees continue to exist separately and
identify joint topics and joint working groups that would benefit both.
Some discussion about whether 2 or 4 joint topics would be most
appropriate.

*Proposal on the table *(people had to go to other meetings, so no formal
decision was made):

EOC continues as is, but designates 4 meetings per year to focus on
engagement/outreach/informal learning

Two would be developed collaboratively with the communications committee

Two would be spearheaded by the education/outreach committee with the
communications committee explicitly invited

Communications Committee continues with 6 meetings per year, 2 of which are
joint with the EOC and 2 “bonus” meetings on engagement/informal learning
topics that are organized by EOC with Communications Committee (and broader
community?) invited.

If we're looking at a jointly-developed topic for the March
EOC/Communications Committee meeting (March 5, Noon Pacific time, 3 PM ET),
we need to decide on that topic and develop some starting points for
discussion or identify a guest speaker.

I would propose that we need one more joint leadership meeting to
accomplish that, make a decision about the above plan, and set the topics
and leaders for the other 3 meetings planned this year (if we are OK, as a
group, with that approach).

Sound about right? I'll put together a doodle for late January/early Feb.
PLease let me know if there are windows in there that are impossible for
you.

Thanks, Marty

Hello all-

I was on mute during the call with lots going on around me, but was
listening intently and thinking and I look forward to seeing the
notes/google doc where Marty was recording ideas.

Overall, I think the coordination of our two committees can potentially
generate more energy and engagement from within the network in our thinking
about messaging. While there's a difference between formal ed, informal
ed, outreach, and public communication, all in all, they are the
interpretation steps to tell "why does this matter".

For each of our audiences, we have to have a sense of prior knowledge and
values. I'd love to see us be able to pull together some streamlined
messaging that can communicate and teach, across the board, things like why
a systems approach is important, why a long term time series is important,
what "ecological research" means for sustainability and preservation, etc.

We have a cool network logo and website, but what about network messages
that promote science literacy, climate literacy, evidence-based decision
making, etc? They don't need to be complicated visions or missions, but
metaphorical, including values, and leading to community actions that
support our work.

I know we don't have extra time or money, but we have a lot of creative
brain power. And maybe by pulling from what individual sites are already
doing, we could condense it down to a shared message?

Hope everyone had a good break and is ready to dive back in with renewed
energy.

THis call kind of snuck up on me, so thought I'd circulate a reminder that
we have a call scheduled this morning (in 10 minutes) to discuss
coordination between the education and the communications committees.

Details below.
