Dear all,

As promised, here is your bimonthly update on progress for each of the projects identified in our second meeting. For your reference, the list of projects and leaders can also be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iML_EzPHvhQjNI50Z0ITYCGj58kiP7lbUBSog9aQ5IU/edit?usp=sharing <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iML_EzPHvhQjNI50Z0ITYCGj58kiP7lbUBSog9aQ5IU/edit?usp=sharing>
If you would like to contribute to one or more of these projects, then please feel free to contact the project leader(s) and offer ways to help. If you have questions, then please feel free to ask the project leaders or me. Thanks in advance for your contributions!

Best wishes,

Forest, Jane, and Laura

Nonrandom changes in biodiversity and EF led by Tim Newbold
No update at this time.

BEF causality review led by Laura Dee
Laura is working on revisions and an updated draft.

NutNet BEF causality analysis led by Laura Dee
No update at this time.

Global Change Drivers, Coexistence mechanisms, and Scaling BEF led by Jane Cowles
Working with Laura Williams on framing the paper, focusing on whether we can group mechanisms into "coexistence mechanisms that are affected by productivity changes" (which would inherently have feedbacks) and "coexistence mechanisms that are unrelated to productivity" (which would not have the same feedback loop). This would fundamentally influence how the impacts of global change drivers on coexistence mechanisms would impact biodiversity-functioning relationships over space and time. If you're interested in thinking about this conceptually prior to the meeting, get in touch with Jane.

Instrumental variables in CDR experiments led by Jane Cowles
Beginning analyses and selection of instrumental variables in nitrogen addition experiments (to isolate the influence of productivity on biodiversity) and biodiversity experiments (to isolate the impact of species richness on productivity).

Quantifying performance-enhancing insurance effects led by Forest Isbell
Data continue to trickle in. Forest has started analyzing data. This is an opt-out paper, so you will all (eventually) receive a draft of the manuscript with an invitation to collaborate.

Global drivers of biodiversity loss (N) led by Yann Hautier
No update at this time.

SAR, EAR, and BEF led by Akira Mori
Working on the simulations that are necessary to estimate the number of species lost by 2070s. Because of computational limitations, this takes time. Akira hopes to have some preliminary results by the next meeting.

Agenda 2049 led by Mary O’Connor
No update at this time.

Global BEF led by Sasha Wright
No update at this time.
