[LTER-All-lter] NIMO updates

Dear all,
We know many of you are waiting for news regarding the new LTER Network Information Management Office (NIMO) developments. Now that the LTER Information Managers have cast their vote to entrust the leadership to our team here at the University of Wisconsin and the LTER Executive Board has endorsed their choice, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves. Both, Corinna Gries and Paul Hanson are on the leadership team at the North Temperate Lakes LTER site. Gries is currently information manager and Paul Hanson limnologist working at the interface of science and technology. Over the years we both have held leadership positions within LTER Network as IM chair and NISAC chair, respectively.
We feel honored by the trust the Information Management Committee has expressed in choosing us to lead the NIMO effort, thank the EB for endorsing their choice, and are very excited to take on this new challenge. In this new capacity we are hoping to collaborate closely with many of you from the science and the information management sectors of LTER.
We recently discussed parameters and timeline for NIMO with Saran Twombly at NSF. We are expected to write a proposal for three years and consider this a transition from the old LTER IM model to a new model for environmental data management that is not well defined yet but will probably be larger than LTER. The immediate timeline she outlined for us is: proposal submission in Mid-January, NSF processing of the proposal until Mid-March, the new NIMO in place by the end of April.
As you may know, four people on the current LTER EB have agreed to work closely with us during the proposal writing effort, i.e., reading drafts and providing timely comments. However, we welcome any and all input and questions that you may have regarding these exciting new developments for LTER IM. Please feel free to contact us directly with any concerns you may have and we will try to address them as best as we can.
