<div><br /><div style="color:#008000;">Xavier Cortada's solo exhibition of works created at Hubbard Brook runs from March 26 through April 29, 2018, at the Hibiscus Gallery in Pinecrest, Florida. <br /><br /><em>Water Paintings allowed me to give water at Hubbard Brook's nine watersheds a voice. In the work, I made water the protagonist. In June 2016, I placed nine pencil drawings and nine pieces of watercolor paper inside nylon mesh. I then tied the mesh bags to a rope at each of the nine weirs at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and left them there for a period of 16 weeks. The water flowing through the mesh stained the paper inside. Water samples and water data were collected by scientists over the same 16-week period, from the same nine weirs. The final work included water samples, data, even the residue in filters. <div style="text-align:left;" align="left">On October 27, two days before the remnants of Tropical Storm Philippe drenched New England, toppled trees, and cut power to more than 1.1 million residents, a team of researchers at Hubbard Brook were bracing for the deluge of water samples and data that the rain would bring. Alerted by meteorologist Eric Kelsey, Director of Research at Mount Washington Observatory, of a potentially historic extreme rain event, "Water RAT" (Rapid Assessment Team) mobilized and prepared to monitor the coming storm.<br /></div>

<div>In late September, a group of Yale F&ES alumni and current students spent several days at Hubbard Brook learning about the legacy, research, and relevance of the Ecosystem Study. The field-based program was developed by Yale F&ES alumni, Dr. Lindsey Rustad, Melissa Paly, and Jane Sokolow.
