<div dir="ltr">Dear LTER PI's and IM's--<div><br></div><div>Gary asks a question below which suggests we need some additional clarification on personnel spreadsheets for the 40 year review data. The "LTER role" field should be interpreted as "role with respect to your LTER site" (as opposed to a university-conferred title). Please include under "investigator," everyone doing research at the site who isn't listed in another more specific category--whether funded by LTER or not. </div><div><br></div><div>The LTER-funded field is intended to capture some modest indication of the funding relationship (full, partial, none) -- since those are also quite complex.</div><div><br></div><div>"Interested Party" was intended to capture people who may be important to the site, but who aren't doing research. At the Network level, that would be the leadership of related networks or organizations (Teresa Mourad, who runs the SEEDS program at ESA or Tim White who directs the CZO Network, for example). At your site, it might be resource managers or education partners who you consider to be associated with the site, but who aren't doing research (and who wouldn't, therefore, fit under the other categories).</div><div><br></div><div>Thanks, Marty<br><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">---------- Forwarded message ---------<br>From: <strong class="gmail_sendername" dir="auto">Gary Lovett</strong> <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:lovettg@caryinstitute.org">lovettg@caryinstitute.org</a>></span><br>Date: Thu, Feb 21, 2019 at 10:32 AM<br>Subject: LTER role definitions<br>To: Marty Downs <<a href="mailto:downs@nceas.ucsb.edu">downs@nceas.ucsb.edu</a>><br></div><br><br><div lang="EN-US" link="#0563C1" vlink="#954F72"><div class="m_8594873614395850104WordSection1"><p class="MsoNormal">Hi Marty:</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">We are working on sending out an information request to our HBR people for the 40-y review. At one point in the your instructions you mention that you are interested in capturing the number of “LTER investigators” that are not actually funded by the LTER. We have a lot of those people at HBR. That brings up a question about your “LTER role” category. If someone is a researcher or student at the site but is not funded by the LTER, do you want them to be just an “interested party”, or do you want another category of “non-funded investigator”? </p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">There is a separate question about whether the person is LTER funded. So if you captured all investigators (not just LTER ones) in the question about LTER role, you could use both pieces of information to figure out how many investigators are LTER funded and how many are not.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Thanks,</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Gary</p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#1f497d">Gary M.
