Alex Rose raised this point in a meeting yesterday: the RET solicitation is rather vague on the expected balance between fieldwork, science deliverables, and education deliverables. Of course it’s great to have that flexibility in the RFP,
but at our site this summer, in practice, that has led to some uncertainty and consternation for our RET. She knows her primary goal is create a data nugget, and she’s set her own personal goal of creating a “lab kit” to test out in her classroom – but, since
she’s embedded in the PI’s lab this summer with a group of busy-bee RAs and REUs, she is also engaged in fieldwork and lab analysis and feels an imperative to “keep up” with the lab’s fieldwork and analysis needs. There has been a lot of transparency and communication
among the educators and the PI on this project, but the uncertainty still remains, especially as the summer starts to draw to a close and time is limited.
