<h2><strong><span style="color:#3d85c6">Announcements</span></strong></h2>
<h3>LTER Network Office and Environmental Data Initiative Secure NSF Funding</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">The Network Communications Office (LNCO), established at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2015, will continue to be funded under a 5-year cooperative agreement with NSF.  The name of the office will change to LTER Network Office, to better reflect the scope of synthesis, collaboration, coordination, and administrative activities of the office.</p>
<p style="padding-left:40px">The Environmental Data Initiative has also won continued funding through grants from the Division of Biological Infrastructure to the University of Wisconsin and the University of New Mexico. Congratulations to Corinna Gries and Mark Servilla, who lead those joint efforts.</p>
<h3>LTER Site RFPs</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">NSF’s <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=7671&ods_key=nsf19593">LTER Site Renewal RFP</a> is now live. NSF has also released a new <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19594/nsf19594.htm?org=NS">urban site solicitation</a>.</p>
<h3>New Call for LTER Synthesis Working Group Proposals!</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">The 2019 synthesis working groups competition has been released. Find <a href="https://lternet.edu/synthesis/request-for-proposals-2019/"><strong>the RFP and new resources</strong></a> for developing collaborative proposals on the LTER Network website under “synthesis.” The first <strong>informational webinar</strong> is scheduled for August 22, this Thursday. <a href="https://ucsb.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Wuo3FUBbSCyuWVSBNIGdhQ"><strong>Register online!</strong></a></p>
<h3>Attending the ILTER open Science Meeting in Leipzig?</h3>

<h3>ESA 2020 Session Deadline</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">The Ecological Society of America’s 2019 Annual Meeting just wrapped up, but the <strong>September 19</strong> deadline for <a href="https://www.esa.org/saltlake/organized-oral-sessions/">symposia</a> and <a href="https://www.esa.org/saltlake/organized-oral-sessions/">oral session</a> proposals for the 2020 meeting is already looming. The LTER Network celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020 and an ESA symposium is a great way to mark the occasion.</p>
<h3>ILTER Survey on Site and Dataset Registry</h3>

<h2><span style="color:#3366ff">Around the Network</span></h2>
<h3>A Friend Passes</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">The LTER Network and the ecological community are mourning <a href="https://www.bu.edu/articles/2019/anthony-janetos-obituary/">the passing of Tony Janetos</a>, an active participant in the former LTER External Advisory Board, Professor of Earth and Environment and Director of the Pardee Center at Boston University, co-chair of the U.S. National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change, and all-around strong advocate for the inclusion of ecology in policy making within the federal government and the National Academies. He will be missed by many.</p>
<h3>An Urban Ecology E-Book</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">An interdisciplinary team of urban ecologists, including members of Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER, recently released an eBook: <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015Y1YTMO/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1">The Baltimore School of Urban Ecology: Space, Scale, and Time for the Study of Cities</a>. The book focuses on the development and structure of an exemplary urban project.</p>
<h3>Butterflies on Air</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">Dr. Nick Haddad was featured in the <a href="http://www.peoplebehindthescience.com/dr-nick-haddad/">People Behind the Science</a> podcast on Aug 5. The episode is titled: <em>Recovering Rare and Endangered Butterfly Populations through Conservation Corridors and Other Strategies</em>.</p>
<h3>Society for Range Management Honors Joel Brown</h3>
<p style="padding-left:40px">Congratulations to Dr. Joel R. Brown, Rangeland Ecologist for the USDA-NRCS at Jornada Experimental Range and a Jornada LTER collaborator, for receiving the Fredric G. Renner Award at the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) 72nd Annual Meeting. This prestigious award is presented with the belief that such recognition will foster better use of rangeland resources and a broader understanding of the contributions that these resources make to the welfare of all people.</p>
